Numbers are a useless emotion: A year of traffic in one single impression
ArgumentCollection - Broadchoice Engineering | 8/7/08 6:33 AM CST

They say a picture is worth more than thousand words and yet in almost any web analytics package all we get are numbers. Ok, they have pie charts, bar charts and the obligatory map overlay, but if you have over a 100 reports you need to be able to fill up the screen, right? For the past year I've been using a lot of different web analytics packages and I've become more and more convinced that numbers tell you very little, especially if they can not be compared with other numbers. I'm all about shiny stuff and pretty pictures so last night I tried to compile a full year of traffic in one single picture and this is the result: Every bubble represents a single day of traffic. Bigger bubbles equal more traffic, green bubbles represent tra...

Since I'm very nearly on Linux full time now, and I'm having to make some changes to a Flex app I built a while back, I decided to give Flex Builder 3 for Linux a shot. It's still at Alpha 3, and it's missing design view and some other things, but si...

Apprently asking or or talking about features leads to M$ Word
johnwilker.com | 8/7/08 6:01 AM CST

I've been a loyal Yojimbo user for a while, and no am not. I posted the why's of it before. I am on a support list thread though, because of the question I asked. There's a thread going on about "best note taking app" Ironically it started as a "hey you guys, Yojimbo isn't listed, but look at the other options..." and quickly turned into a Flame war. Here's the thread for those interested I chimed in expressing my sadness at leaving the Yojimbo family, agreeing that baseless complaining serves no purpose, but open dialog with the software creator should be a good thing. I really wanto post again, but as is always the case in flame wars, no one cares what anyone has to say. A few choice points are made (wrongly IMHO), tha...

WhosOnCFC SQL Attack View
Shane's ramblings | 8/7/08 5:46 AM CST

I suppose I will go ahead and post the complete code for my SQL Attack page. I posted the first bit yesterday afternoon, but I have added in some other details. For a sample of the output you can see my SQL Attacks page I suppose I could have went with a QoQ to filter out the injection signature, but I decided just to loop through the query returned by WhosOnline() for simplicities sake. Gliffy--A UML tool
Occasional Thoughts | 8/7/08 5:42 AM CST

Over the years, I've tried out a lot of UML editors. (UML, or The Unified Modeling Language, is a diagramming standard for classes, objects, and interactions used in object-oriented designs.) UML can be a huge beast, but I primarily use the class diagram portion of the standard. What I want in a UML tool is a tool that will let me create classes with methods and properties quickly. I haven't been really happy with any of the existing offerings. Either they are too expensive or too clunky (I don't want a popup dialog box to enter a new method!) Recently, I've been working with Gliffy (gliffy.com), an online, Flash-based diagramming tool with modules for floor plans, flow charts, entity-relationship diagrams, networks, user interfaces, and ...

Trading Places
Occasional Thoughts | 8/7/08 5:42 AM CST

I wrote a blogpost recently in which I said, "We're no more in the business of delivering code than Lamborghini is of delivering metal." So, what business are we in, exactly? If you're at all responsible for the success of your company, this is an important question. Yes, in the hands of silly marketing types, it can turn into something ponderous like a "mission statement" so abstract ("We deliver value to the organization...") as to be worthless, but don't let that stop you. I've recently been working on two large ecommerce projects and some comments made by both clients made me think about this. One client told me, "We had no idea we could use the web like this." The other said, "You've completely changed what we thought was possible." ...

SpatialKey: reinventing map visualizations
AsFusion | 8/7/08 10:01 PM CST

We've had the pleasure to work with an amazing team in what I think is the next generation of map visualizations. We are not talking about a few hundred of points on a map, you can see millions of those points. And not only that, but also you can view them as heatmaps, squares, aggregated points and more. Another key point is the filtering the data. Having too many points is great but without a tool to drill down to filter the data, you may encounter that is difficult to find what you are looking for. In addition to that, you can compare data and visualize the differences between them, for example data from different periods (year, months, days, etc). Talking about time, there is a great timeline component that allows you to "play back" th...

Trusted Source? DNS Cache Poisoning
Coder's Revolution | 8/6/08 5:01 PM CST

So, I assume you've heard the latest buzz about DNS Cache Poisoning and the subsequently released patches. It's rather interesting, and a bit unnerving that the "patch" for now simply makes the exploit harder to pull off-- not impossible. I guess that's basically because the patch simply makes name server requests more randomized. Anything more would require an overhaul to the DNS protocol itself. [More]

ColdFusion Social Network Platform (Open Source)
mycfblog | 8/6/08 4:41 PM CST

As some of you may have remembered... I started a social network platform that I planned to release as open source. This project is not dorment, infact - it's being created under LongarmChat.com which I just announced. I'm using this LongarmChat project as the funding to get the code written. The data structure could be better but it's going to blow the socks off of all of the other ColdFusion Social Platorms... considering none exist that I have found... If you feel the urge to watch the progress of the system and it's modules feel free to visit http://dev.longarmchat.com/ to get a peak at some of the basics. You cannot register or login on this yet but all of our local copies work. I'll keep you posted when the registration and logi...

Holistic User Experience
Instant Badger | 8/6/08 1:01 PM CST

SONAR v1.0 is just around the corner, and we've been thinking a lot about the user experience we offer. One of the key differences this time round is the recognition that User Experience is not just about the interface. Users in this sense are not just end users - they're *anyone* who interacts in any way with your software or your company. They include the sysadmins who have to install your stuff and keep it up and running, the managers who have to make a purchasing decision about whose software to spend their hard-won budget on. So we believe that User Experience is about looking at the whole experience the user has in interacting with your software and you. It's about making the whole thing as easy as possible for them, right from the wa...

Adobe Connect Plugin for OS X Leopard Fix
Jeff Coughlin | 8/6/08 9:41 AM CST

If you were like me and upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5 when it was released and used Adobe Acrobat Connect (either Pro or basic version) to give presentations then you were likely not too happy with the random crashes while screen sharing. I had called Adobe tech support multiple times and was told that they were working on it. Finally in May tech support told me they had a fix for it. Essentially you just need to manually remove the old plugin and it will automatically be upgraded to the new version the next time you attempt to connect to Connect (read the article for full details). This worries me a little... Should I randomly delete these going forward in order to check for a new plugin version? From that point on it has worked great for...
