First Steps on AIR

On a suggestion from a friend, I have decided to take my first few faltering steps writing an AIR application.  I started querying Google trying to find a good point to jump in then I remembered I have connections with some of the best folks in the business, you guys!  Now I am not lazy to the point that I do not want to do my own research, but I would rather make an educated guess instead of just going off all willy nilly, so to speak.

My main questions resolve more or less around the development platform?  Is Flex Builder required or is it something that can be done in another editor?

I look forward to getting started with it.  Any insight any of you have would be great.

Dan Wilson's Gravatar Shane,

Make a simple flex app then convert it to AIR. http://www.flexer.info/2008/04/23/converting-a-fle...

Andy Matthews's Gravatar Both the Aptana stand alone app, or the Aptana plugin for Eclipse are open source. If you're familiar with HTML/CSS/JS already then you'd probably get up and running with AIR apps quicker using that route. You can find out more here:

http://www.aptana.com

They don't make the plugin easy to find, so here's a link for that one:

Shane Zehnder's Gravatar Thanks. That Aptana studio looks like what I am looking for. Starving programmers cannot afford the license for Flex. :D

Andy Matthews's Gravatar I'll give you fair warning if you've never used Eclipse before. It takes some getting used to. You can't just double click to open a file with Aptana/Eclipse...you've got to create a project first and add files to it. Aptana makes creating a project really easy, but there's still a learning curve involved.
